Kevin Unterstein joins the Pioneer men's lacrosse program as the volunteer assistant for the 2009-10 season. Unterstein comes to DU after serving as an assistant coach for the Princeton Tigers last season, working primarily with the defense and the face-off specialists.
For the Pioneers, Unterstein will assist assistant coach Trevor Tierney with the defense, with his prime focus on working with the face-off men and the overall face-off game. He will help coordinate the Pioneers' man-down unit and work specifically with the defensive midfielders. He will also help the assistant coaches with camps, clinics and the Denver Elite Club Team.
Unterstein graduated from Hofstra with a degree in sociology after a four-year career as a shortstick defensive midfielder. A native of Shoreham, N.Y., he was a high school All-America at Shoreham-Wading River High, where he was part of four Suffolk County championships and one state championship.
During his time with the Pride, Unterstein helped lead Hofstra to a No. 2 national ranking and a No. 3 seed in the NCAA tournament as a sophomore. As a junior, he earned USILA All-America honors and then capped off his four-year career as the 2008 Colonial Athletic Association Defensive Player of the year.
Adding to his Player of the Year honor, he was also named to the 2008 CAA All-Tournament team and honored as a First-Team All-CAA selection. While with Hofstra, Unterstein was part of a three-man brother act that saw his older brother Chris and twin brother Mike also play for the Pride.
Coach Unterstein is also known as Coach Strongenough and he handles administrative duties for our camps and clinics.
